What I Do:
"As the Operations Manager at the GS (General Supply) Bulk Yard at Camp Arifjan, I oversee three branches, each with its own manager: Receiving, Storage and Issuing. We issue general supply military items such as truck wheels and doors, fuel tanks, toilet paper, bedding, tents, boots, T-shirts, sweaters, helmets, basically anything soldiers use for themselves or on a piece of equipment."
A 24-Hour Mission
"We support the military in Germany, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait, and some CSA, Ltd. customers. We run a 24-hour operation. It’s a 48-hour workweek, with the potential for overtime, so we all get to know each other really well. We’re a tight team."
Getting Everyone on the Same Page
"The three branches run hand-in-hand. Every day, I attend a department-level meeting to be briefed on military needs and priorities. Then I meet with my three branch managers, and we discuss these concerns so we’re all working with the same information."
It Takes Lots of Materiel Handling Equipment
"We send 25 loaded trucks a day to Iraq, Afghanistan and even some to the United States – all loaded with equipment and supplies for soldiers. Every day, we use around 45 pieces of material-handling equipment, forklifts ranging from 4,000 pounds to 50,000 pounds, to help us move, lift, load and unload all of this stuff. Everybody gets forklift training as well as ongoing safety training to maintain a safe work environment."
Tracking Every Piece
"We run a tracking operation using SARSS (Standard Army Retail Supply) to account for incoming and outgoing items, and we generate daily, weekly and monthly accountability reports for the military."
Love the Food
"On my time off, I go shopping, to meet people, and to eat at all the great restaurants here. The food is wonderful!"
